Holy Week and Pascha

By J. Euphemia Briere

At the end of the forty day Fast of Great Lent, the Holy Church celebrates the great events at the close of our Lord Jesus Christs life on earth that brought to fulfillment the purpose of His Incarnation. Our Lord had foretold to His Apostles that He would be put to death, and that He would rise again. Yet, they had not fully understood these things. They believed that Jesus was the Christ, the promised Messiah, but they did not yet grasp how He was to fulfill all the prophecies concerning Him and complete His Divine purpose. After the Resurrection and Ascension of our Lord, and the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, they were then illumined to understand and preach the Gospel.
