The Synaxarion: The Lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church, Volume One: Introduction, September, October

By Hieromonk Makarios of Simonos Petra
Translated from the French by Christopher Hookway

Volume One of The Synaxarion: The Lives of the Saints of the Orthodox Church

“The purpose of the Synaxarion is to provide everyone, of whatever age or state in life, with spiritual nourishment, through a meeting with the saints commemorated each day, which may serve as a preparation for prayer. To this end, the Synaxarion offers a short life of each of these saints, making use of the best sources available and endeavouring to bring out those aspects of the saint’s life that are most characteristic and useful for the instruction and spiritual benefit of the reader. For saints who figure largely in the history of the Church, besides the ancient sources, modern academic studies have been consulted, so as the better to bring into relief the saints’ contribution to the building up of the Body of Christ, and to make the situations in which they bore witness to the unchanging Truth of the Gospel as clear as possible.”
