The Experience of God: Orthodox Dogmatic Theology, Volume 2: The World: Creation and Deification

Dumitru Staniloae
Translated and Edited by Ioan Ionita and Robert Barringer
Preface by Ion Bria

Volume 2 of The Experience of God: Orthodox Dogmatic Theology

“This second volume of The Experience of God (which corresponds with the second part of the first volume of Fr. Staniloae’s Dogmatic Theology, published in Romanian in 1978, reprinted in 1997) is an extensive and careful exploration of a new theme: The World—Creation and Deification. It was not customary among Orthodox theologians to include such a theme in their handbooks or university courses. Focusing his reflection on the world (understood both as humanity and as cosmic creation) was not, however, accidental for Fr. Staniloae. It was a permanent concern of his and was developed by him in several stages. In fact, by formulating a theology of the world, Fr. Staniloae indicated a new approach for theological epistemology, which is strongly emphasized in this volume. At the same time, he offered here some farsighted research into one of the most critical subjects in ecumenical theology.”
