St. Photios the Great: Philosopher and Theologian

St. Photios the Great (820–891), Patriarch of Constantinople, has been receiving increasing attention in recent years in the United States, in Europe, and in Greece. This phenomenon shows that the concerns, thought and activities of this truly great and holy Churchman are very relevant today to Orthodox Christians and others as well.
In this book, Professor Cavarnos discusses St. Photios’ thought both from the standpoint of philosophy and from that of theology. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, he deals with St. Photios as a philosopher. His discussion of this subject is the most extensive and significant one thus far to appear in print, and culminates in the conclusion that St. Photios was a very important philosopher. In the second part, Dr. Cavarnos deals with Photios primarily as a theologian, one whose impact has been great through the centuries. His account here is in the form of discussion-reviews of five noteworthy books that deal exclusively with St. Photios.
