“The four desert Fathers who give their names to this volume—Pambo, Evagrius, Macarius of Egypt, and Macarius of Alexandria—were well known in late antiquity but were most famous, perhaps, because of their Lives recounted by the monk (and later bishop) Palladius in his Lausiac History. The Lausiac History, however, is not a straightforward historical source; theological and spiritual issues, indeed arguments and bitter fisticuffs, have seemingly shaped its form and contents. The most important of these issues vis-à-vis the four Lives offered here were Origenism and the Anthropomorphite controversy.” —“Introduction”
