The Great Synaxaristes of the Orthodox Church: April

Translated from the Greek

A volume of The Great Synaxaristes of the Orthodox Church

“Mary, our venerable mother, hailed from Egypt. She flourished during the years of the great Justinian I, emperor from 527 until 565. Now, according to the archangel, ‘It is good to hide the secret of a king, but it is glorious to reveal and preach the works of God.’ So said the Archangel Raphael to Tobit when he performed the wonderful healing of Tobit’s blindness. Not to keep the secret of a king is indeed perilous and a terrible risk, but to be silent about the works of God is a great loss for the soul. ‘And I,’ says Saint Sophronios, ‘in writing the life of Saint Mary of Egypt, am afraid, by keeping silence, to hide the works of God.’”
—“On the 1st of April, the holy Church commemorates our venerable Mother MARY of Egypt.”
