The History of the Council of Florence

Ivan N. Ostroumoff
Translated from the Russian by Basil Popoff

“[...T]his book[...]concerns the so-called union of the churches. Whenever talk of such union is in the air, the Council of Florence is certain to be mentioned. Ivan N. Ostroumoff’s history, first published in Moscow in 1847, was translated into English a little over a century ago, when such talk was already beginning to be heard. It has not lost any of its relevance or authority today. Ostroumoff clearly shows what kind of precedent the ‘union’ proclaimed at that Council affords, and though firmly Orthodox in point of view, his work possesses a much greater objectivity and accuracy on the subject than anything else currently available in English. [...]To Ostroumoff’s History we have added four recent Letters of the Most Reverend Metropolitan Philaret, First Hierarch of the Synod of Russian Bishops Outside of Russia.”
—“To the Pious & Orthodox Christian Reader.”
