Orthodox Christianity and the Spirit of Contemporary Ecumenism

Second Edition

Father Daniel Degyansky
Edited by Bishop Auxentios of Photiki
Foreword by Archbishop Chrysostomos of Etna

“[...T]he Orthodox Church has repeatedly found Herself participating in ecumenical activities that are, in truth, fundamentally antithetical to Her understanding of Christian unity. The long history of the ecumenical movement and the unchanging spirit which has been its motivating force, in fact, show that it is to the benefit of the Orthodox Church to avoid participation in these endeavors for unity. [...]The ‘ecclesiological perspective’ of contemporary ecumenism is precisely the issue on which we will focus in our study, since it is this aspect of the movement which most concerns us conservative Orthodox Christians—if only because, again, the ecclesiological presuppositions of modern ecumenism are at odds with the Orthodox Church’s understanding of Herself. Far too often, ignoring this fact, the price paid for Orthodox participation in the ecumenical ‘spirit of brotherly love’ is compromise in basic elements of our Faith. Let us, then, look at the ecumenical movement from an historical, ecclesiological, and theological perspective, in order to understand the compromise which it exacts from the Orthodox Christian.”
