Saint Herman Calendar 2016: Orthodox Saints of Crimea

“The Crimean Peninsula (known historically as the Tauric Peninsula) has for millennia been situated at a crossroads of cultures. Located on the northern coast of the Black Sea and the western coast of the Sea of Azov, Crimea has long been a coveted and strategically important site. Although the Christian Faith has seen many reversals there over the centuries, the land has shone shone forth with a host of saints, and at the present time it has a majority Orthodox Christian population and is adorned with many churches and monasteries. The earliest recorded history indicates the establishment of Greek colonies along the southern coast of Crimea in the seventh or sixth century B.C. At that time the northern (and largest) portion of Crimea, consisting of steppe, was occupied by the Scythians. In the first century B.C., it became part of the Roman Empire, and it was soon after the beginning of the Christian era that the Faith was brought to this area.”
