| By St. Philaret (Gumilevsky) of Chernigov Translated from the Russian and edited by the St. Herman of Alaska Brotherhood
“On the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ consists of sixty homilies on events found in the Gospels, beginning with Christ’s betrayal by Judas and ending with His burial in the tomb. The homilies go into great detail in discussing the Scriptural accounts of Christ’s final hours, death and burial. [...]In writing on the all-important subject of Christ’s Passion, Archbishop Philaret relied not on human imagination and fancy, but on the Scriptures and on the Scriptural interpretations and theological formulations of the Holy Fathers. In his homilies he sought to harmonize the four Gospels, comparing the texts in order to set forth in the most complete manner the meaning of the Gospel narratives. He also turned to the Old Testament in order to shed further light on New Testament passages. Nearly a hundred and fifty years after it first appeared in Russia, On the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ was reprinted in Moscow in the year 2000. It is now being made available in its entirety for the first time to English-speaking readers. Like all spiritual classics, it is just as useful today as when it was first written. [...]To this English edition, we have added explanatory footnotes, many of them consisting of Patristic passages that further elucidate the theological meaning of the subjects at hand. Also, following On the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, we have included a homily by St. Philaret on Christ’s Resurrection, which was published in Russian a year after the homilies on the Passion.” —“EDITOR’S PREFACE”
