Akathist to the Most Holy Mother of God in Honor of Her Icon The Milkgiver

Translated from the Serbian publication of the Hermitage of St. Sava in Karyes, the Holy Monastery of Hilandar, Mount Athos, 2004.

No. 13 of St. Paisius Orthodox Monastery Series

“The Icon of the Mother of God, ‘the Milkgiver,’ which was long known in the Christian East, was painted on the basis of the truth of the Gospels: that the most holy Mother of God nursed the incarnate Lord Christ as her Son, which the woman in the Gospel confessed in the words she directed to Christ: Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked (Luke 11:27). Of this truth, the Holy Fathers of the Eastern Church both spoke and wrote. Thus, St. Ephraim the Syrian says (in the Hymns on the Nativity of Christ): From the Virgin womb came forth a Newborn, and He was fed by milk, and grew among children—the Son of the Lord of all. The holy Virgin Mother gave milk to Christ, and as a man He was nourished by her milk. As the Lord was nourished by the milk of Mary, life was poured out to the whole world.”
