Holy New Martyr Elizabeth, Grand Duchess of Russia

text by Cătălin Grigore
illustrated by Adela Maria Calistru
translated by Alexandra Grigore

A volume of Iona Publishing House Collection

“In 1864, on a beautiful autumn day, in the land of Hesse in today’s Germany, little Duchess Elizabeth was born. It was a moment of great joy, because the baby girl was the second child of Grand Duke Loius IV of Hesse-Darmstadt and Princess Alice of Great Britain, daughter of the famous Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland. In all, she had four sisters and two brothers. They were a rich and noble family, but they lived with great simplicity. Although they had a lot of servants, the children were taught to clean their own rooms, make their beds, light the fireplace and cook for themselves. At the same time, Elizabeth’s parents gave the major part of their wealth to charities.”
