In the Image and Likeness of God

Vladimir Lossky
Edited by John H. Erickson and Thomas E. Bird
Introduction by John Meyendorff

“The present volume represents a collection of Lossky’s articles, published over the years in various periodicals. [...]Under the general title In the Image and Likeness of God, the book contains articles on themes which Lossky also treated elsewhere: the importance of ‘apophatic’ (or ‘negative’) theology, the vision of divine light, and the doctrine of the procession of the Holy Spirit from the Father. As in his other writings, he brilliantly shows that these doctrines are not peripheral to the Christian Gospel, but stand at its very center and reveal the true and living God of Scriptures, always different from and transcendent to all concepts and philosophies. Lossky concerns the relationship between the Orthodox doctrine of the Trinity and the Orthodox understanding of man: like the divine Persons of the Trinity, the human ‘person’—in the image of God—in its absolute uniqueness, but equally absolute ‘relatedness’ in love to other persons, can only be understood theologically.”
