A volume of The Great Synaxaristes of the Orthodox Church
“Justin, the holy martyr and philosopher, gives his background in the first line of his Apology: ‘Justin, the son of Priscos, son of Baccheios, of Flavia Neapolis, in Palestinian Syria.’ Its inhabitants were all, or for the most part, pagans. The names of the father and grandfather of Justin confirm a pagan origin, and he speaks of himself as uncircumcised. The date of his birth is uncertain, but would seem to fall in the first years of the second century. Though his father reared him in the errors and superstitions of the heathen, yet he did not neglect to cultivate the young mind of Justin by having him introduced to several branches of human literature. From the evidence, it appears that his parents had considerable means. They gave their son an excellent education in the pagan culture of that day.” —“On the 1st of June, the holy Church commemorates the holy Martyr JUSTIN the Philosopher.”
