Romanian Nationalism During the Reign of King Mihai I

Ernest H. Latham, Jr.

Number XLI of Monographic Supplement Series

“This paper will be concerned with Romanian nationalism during the three years, eleven months, two weeks and four days that General, later Marshal, Ion Antonescu was Conducător of Romania. Simultaneously Mihai I was the chief of state. In fact, however, he was totally marginalized from participation in and the processes of the Romanian government and reduced to the occasional ceremonial role on reviewing stands and visits to the Eastern Front, occasions by which his presence was intended to further validate the Antonescu regime. Indeed, the personal animosity between the two men was such that Antonescu neglected to inform him that the Royal Romanian Army had been ordered to cross the Prut River and join Germany in the Second World War.”
