Holy Hierarch Luke of Crimea, the Unmercenary Physician

told by Cătălin Grigore
illustrated by Adela Maria Calistru
translated by Medana Oltean

A volume of Iona Publishing House Collection

“He who would later become Bishop Luke was born in the spring of 1877, in Tsarist Russia, into the family of a pharmacist who had two more sons and two daughters. At Baptism, he was given the name of Valentine. Though not at all wealthy, his parents were very benevolent, helping the poor and the sick as much as they could. His mother Mary cared especially for imprisoned people with great tenderness and gentleness. With her own hands, she cooked food and baked cakes, which she sent to prisoners in jails. His father, Felix the pharmacist, prepared all sorts of cures and healing potions for the sick. In this manner, little Valentine was from his earliest childhood profoundly moved and touched by the example of his parents.”
